I Want to Go Green

Posted by Roberto Martínez on 03/20/2009 in Untagged

It seems that what matters the most to a whole lot of people is not the health of our world but their own wealth.

In recent news, the big players of hybrid car manufacturing have seen the sales of hybrids declined due to current gas prices.  At the same time, they are happy to accept the demand for big cars, like Suburbans and big trucks.  Demand for bigger vehicles has increased in the last three months.

According to their calculations, when a gallon of gas is at $4.00, the ROI for a Prius is three years and almost 10 years with current prices.  Never mind that gas prices cannot hold at current levels.

Sadly,  our economic crisis has brought out the truth about what we, as a world want: it is all about money.

The reason they say Hybrid cars sales has almost stopped is in the cost between the gasoline and hybrid versions of the same model. My question for the manufacturers is this: Don’t you think that sacrificing the difference of $2 to $4K will generate more demand for hybrids?  If they did this, they could accelerate the end of gas cars and read the benefit of their research that much sooner.

What do you think?  Would you buy a hybrid if it were the same price as its gas counterpart?
